Fiat 124 Spider Build Sheet by VIN: Classica, Lusso and Abarth
A Fiat 124 Spider build sheet lists the factory equipment recorded for one car: its trim (Classica, Lusso or Abarth), its transmission, its paint and interior, and the packages and options it was ordered with. The modern 124 Spider was sold in North America for the 2017 through 2020 model years, and each one has Fiat's 1.4-liter MultiAir turbocharged four, rear-wheel drive and a manually folding soft top, so the differences between cars come down to trim, gearbox and options. Enter the car's 17-character VIN in the 124 Spider lookup to see its basic identity from the VIN decode and, when a record is available, the equipment listing with sales codes and descriptions. Availability varies by VIN, and the listing doesn't include MSRP or option prices.
A Fiat built alongside the Miata
The 124 Spider was assembled by Mazda in Hiroshima, Japan, on the same platform as the fourth-generation MX-5 Miata, which is why its VIN begins with J, the country code for Japan. Fiat supplied the engine, the exterior styling and its own chassis tuning. That overlap is useful to know as an owner: much of the structure, the interior layout and many chassis components are shared with the Miata, while the engine and body panels are Fiat-specific. The build sheet confirms which Fiat configuration you have, which helps when ordering trim-specific parts.
Trims at a glance
| Trim | Positioning | Typical differences |
|---|---|---|
| Classica | Entry level | Cloth seats and the simplest equipment set |
| Lusso | Comfort-oriented (lusso is Italian for luxury) | Leather upholstery and more convenience features, with packages that added technology and safety items |
| Abarth | Performance version | Sport-tuned suspension, a mechanical limited-slip differential, a slightly stronger tune of the turbo engine, Abarth styling and scorpion badges |
Special editions were layered onto these trims in several years. If a listing names one, check that the record's trim and package lines support it.
Configuration details the record confirms
- Transmission. A six-speed manual and a six-speed automatic were both offered. On a two-seat roadster it's often the first thing a buyer filters by, and the record settles it.
- Packages on upper trims. Items such as navigation, premium audio and blind-spot monitoring were typically grouped into packages, depending on trim and year, rather than sold one at a time.
- Abarth extras. Upgraded brakes and sport seats were offered on the Abarth in some years. Both can also be fitted later, so compare the record with the car.
- Paint and interior. Exterior color and interior color and material are recorded with the build, which helps with paint matching and replacement trim.
- Wheels. Wheel designs differ by trim and are a common later change.
A basic VIN decode typically shows the make, model, model year and engine size, and sometimes the trim. Transmission, packages and colors come from the equipment listing, not from the 17 characters. For what MultiAir, Lusso and Abarth mean on a record, see the Fiat and Alfa Romeo terms glossary.
Not the classic 124 Sport Spider
The name revives the Fiat 124 Sport Spider, a Pininfarina-designed roadster sold in the U.S. from the late 1960s into the 1980s. Cars built before the 1981 model year don't have 17-character VINs, so they can't be entered in the lookup at all. For later classic Spiders, a factory equipment record may not exist, and original paperwork is usually the better source of build details.
Limits of a 124 Spider build sheet
- No prices. MSRP and option prices were on the original window sticker, which isn't returned here; the Fiat window sticker page explains the difference.
- No later changes. Aftermarket exhausts, suspension, wheels and replacement soft tops won't appear on the record.
- No condition or history. Mileage, maintenance, accident repairs and the state of the top are matters for inspection.
- No record for some VINs. Coverage varies by VIN, model year and source availability.
