Fiat Build Sheet by VIN: Reading a Fiat Factory Record

A Fiat build sheet is the factory configuration record for one car: a list of the equipment installed when that particular 500, 500L, 500X or 124 Spider was built, with a sales code and a short description on each line. To get one, enter the 17-character VIN in the VIN lookup. The result first shows the car's basic identity from a public VIN decoder, then the factory build sheet when a record is available for that VIN. It answers what the 17 characters can't: the exact trim, transmission, paint, interior, packages and individual options. It isn't the original window sticker, it carries no MSRP or option prices, and it describes the car as built rather than as it is today. Information varies by VIN, model year, market and source availability, and some VINs return no record.

Fiat models and where they were built

Fiat's North American lineup came from plants on three continents. The assembly plant is encoded in the 11th character of the VIN, so the decoded plant and the model on the build sheet should tell a consistent story.

How a Fiat build sheet is laid out

Records vary in length and order, but the lines fall into a handful of types:

  • Model and trim. Identifies the car, for example a 500 Lounge, a 500X Trekking or a 124 Spider Lusso.
  • Powertrain. Engine and transmission, plus the drivetrain on models that offered a choice, such as the 500X.
  • Paint and interior. Exterior color, and seat material and color.
  • Packages. A single line standing for a group of features. Some records also list the items inside a package separately.
  • Individual options. Standalone items such as a sunroof or an audio upgrade.
  • Deletes. Standard content removed at the factory.
  • Order, market and production codes. Administrative lines describing how the car was ordered or where it was destined, not equipment you can see on the car.

Sales codes are shared across Stellantis brands, so the site's sales code navigator covers far more than Fiat. The entries below show how each line type reads there; any one of these codes may never appear on a Fiat.

What the record adds to a basic decode

A standard VIN decode reads the 17 characters themselves: manufacturer, model, model year, assembly plant and a few encoded attributes such as body style or engine type. Two 500c Lounges of the same model year can decode almost identically and still differ in paint, interior color, transmission, wheels and comfort or audio equipment, because none of those choices is stored in the VIN. The build sheet fills that gap. When some decoded fields come back blank, the record, if one is available, can still show how the car was configured.

Reading a Fiat record without overreading it

  • Standard and optional items sit together. The record lists what was installed, usually without marking which items came with the trim and which were extra-cost choices. Knowing the trim's standard content for that year tells you which lines were real options.
  • Descriptions are terse. Abbreviations and clipped wording are normal. Look up anything unclear rather than guessing.
  • Model years differ. Fiat revised trims and equipment through each model's run, so a feature common on one year's car may be missing from another's.
  • As built is not as is. Wheels, radios, seats and trim parts often get replaced. The record can't confirm condition, mileage, accident history or later repairs.
  • No record isn't a red flag by itself. Some VINs simply return nothing. Fall back on the original paperwork, the labels on the car and a physical inspection.

The record is most useful when you know exactly what you're asking it. Buyers use it to confirm a trim, transmission or Abarth claim; owners use it to find the original paint and interior colors when ordering parts; and people restoring a car use it to put back what the factory installed. Model-specific notes are on the Fiat 500 build sheet and Fiat 124 Spider build sheet pages.
